Cancer Research UK is the world's largest volunteer-supported cancer research organisation in the world. We support the work of scientists, doctors and nurses in hospitals, medical schools, universities and research institutes.

In 2006-07 we spent nearly £27 million in Scotland on some of the UK’s best science and clinical research. Our research portfolio targets all aspects of cancer and covers work in the areas of the biology and causes of cancer, developing cancer treatments, cancer prevention and improving quality of life for cancer patients. Our groundbreaking work is almost entirely funded by donations from the general public and delivers medical advances that save thousands of lives.

The Cross Party Group on Cancer in the Scottish Parliament

The Cross Party Group on Cancer first met in April 2001 and was approved by the Standards Committee as a Cross Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on 9 May 2001.

The Cross Party Group brings together MSPs from all parties with cancer organisations, medical practitioners and researchers to discuss key issues and campaign together to improve cancer services.

The purpose and objectives of the Cross Party Group on Cancer are:

  • To act as a channel of communications between the Scottish Parliament and people and organisations working in cancer research, treatment, care and prevention.
  • To identify areas where inequalities exist in the provision of cancer care and campaign for their improvement.
  • To provide opportunities for MSPs to learn about the latest Scottish and international cancer research and to learn about cancer care needs and services, including the views of both patients and carers.
  • To examine areas of policy or service provision, including both the allocation and the effective use of resources, where there may be inequalities of practice or standards of care and to make representations for effective and timely actions.

The Cross Party Group on Cancer holds regular meetings, and has recently discussed issues such as bowel cancer screening, cancer research challenges, cancer care in local settings, the future of radiotherapy services and the regulation of sunbed salons.

The Scotland Against Cancer Conference, supported by the Cross Party Group on Cancer, is an opportunity to bring together everyone in Scotland with an interest in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention and treatment to consider the way forward.
